The Story

The original version of the album was released in the U.S. on November 6, 1983 with the lead track titled simply ‘Jump’, and including the song ‘Nightline’. A resequenced version was released soon after, ending the first side with "Dance Electric" instead of "Telegraph Your Love", plus other shuffling of side B.

‘I Need You’ was issued as the first single and was an adult contemporary hit, but just barely cracked the U.S. top 40 at its peak. When the follow up singles ‘Automatic’ and ‘Jump’ both hit the top five on all three of the U.S. pop, R&B and dance charts, the album shot into the top ten.

The most common version of the album was the 3rd release and appeared in stores when ‘Jump’ was at the peak of popularity at radio. The sleeve and track sequence remained unchanged from the 2nd release, but the A-side label showed the first track as "Jump (For My Love)", matching how it was printed on the singles, and to help avoid confusion with the Van Halen song ‘Jump’ which was also a hit at the same time. This version of "Jump" is also slightly remixed, and has duration 4:26 instead of 4:22.

In July 1984 the song 'I'm So Excited' was re-released as a single (using an edit of the 1982 12" version) and the album was again reissued, this time with a new catalog number, adding the new version of 'I'm So Excited' to the tracklisting, and removing the track 'Nightline'. The sleeve was updated to match the new tracklist.

‘I'm So Excited’ (which originally appeared on the Sisters' album “[m=111748]”) had been a top 30 hit in its original form in 1982. The 1984 edited remix of the song went all the way to #9, and was certified gold. The fifth and sixth singles, ‘Neutron Dance’ and ‘Baby Come And Get It’, helped to push "Break Out" to multi-platinum status, ultimately selling 4.5 million copies in the U.S. alone—no small feat for a time when record sales were still being tabulated by hand.
