In Germany it was their 15th album including the compilation albums. It was released in the US on October 3, 1969, where it was their 18th album.

The album was named after the street of the same name in London's St. John's Wood in the City of Westminster, where EMI's recording studios are located, where most of their recordings were made. Abbey Road is the last album the Beatles recorded together.
