The Story
"A Quick One" was originally released as Reaction 593 002 on December 9, 1966. It reached #4 in the U.K.
In the U.S. (and presumably Canada) the release was held back until April or May 1967. The album was retitled "[r=7884045]" partly because the '[m=68551]' single had been a minor hit for The Who there and partly because Decca, their U.S. record company objected to the double entendre in the original title. Released as Decca DL4892 (mono), DL74892 (stereo) it peaked at #51. "[r=7884045]" was the same album as "A Quick One" except 'Heatwave' was replaced by '[m=68551]'.
The initial UK release was mono-only. In several European countries (Germany, Italy, Spain), Polydor released the stereo album [m=90409] instead. The LP [m=90409] is missing the last two tracks recorded for [r=1336260]--'So Sad About Us' and 'A Quick One While He's Away'-- and includes the four songs found on EP [m=504904] (among other places) instead.
Stereo and "false stereo" mixes appear in bewildering and inconsistent combinations among the initial stereo releases of these various albums. 'So Sad About Us' was only true stereo in the North American releases. 'Whiskey Man' and 'Don't Look Away' were only in true stereo on European album releases.
