Official Release

The Promise

"The Promise" was the When In Rome's first single. When released in 1987, the 7" was a flop, but the 12" was a minor dance club hit. An album followed in mid-1988. Later that year, a reissue of the single became an international hit—"The Promise" entered the US Hot 100 for a 25-week run beginning on Sep. 3, 1988, peaking at #11 in December. It still fared poorly in the UK, though, only entering the chart at #86 on Jan. 14, 1989 for a 6-week run and peaking at #58 in February. The original 7" mix became the album version. The original long version is called The Ollie North Mix or O.N. Mix, and the short instrumental is the Dub, or O.N. Dub. The Coliseum Mix (a.k.a. Coliseum Club Mix) and Vatican Dub were new mixes by Freddy Bastone for the 1988 re-release.
